Art of the Tactical Carbine Vol.
II by Magpul Dynamics
This collection is another four discs of high-quality
carbine training from Travis Haley and Chris Costa of Magpul
Dynamics. This set
focuses on a class for advanced shooters.
The presentation follows the Magpul Dynamics standard of
high production value, cut away demonstrations, slow motion
and a referenced disc of dills.
The presentation is largely the same as the first volume
but the training is clearly at a higher level. Drills and
stacked with elements and combined until the class is pushed
to higher levels of performance. Basic drills like shooting,
or transitioning to a secondary weapon are stacked into
shooting drills. The training then adds movement,
communication, different positions, cover… pretty much
anything practical for the training environment.
The early presentation covers a lot of basics but quickly
moves to more advanced material, like shifting the carbine
from shoulder to shoulder and using that transition to shoot
around different forms of cover. The malfunction drills from
the previous volume are back, but now the class is doing
them one-handed and even one-handed with their offside hand.
There is a lot a material that covers movement – moving,
shooting and moving, moving with a partner, moving to cover.
Those drills build in complexity and start to tax the
class’s physical and mental limits. In one of my favorites,
the instructors show two facial photos of a target (with
only ten seconds to study them), then have the students run
downrange to an array of targets with several drawn faces
where they have to identify their target and neutralize
them. Simply, it’s hard.
Just like other Magpul Dynamics videos, the video is of a
class, so you get lots of practical advice that comes up as
part of individual instruction during the class. Little tips
like how to dump your primary so that it’s faster to address
malfunctions or reloads when you have an opportunity to
address those issues.
One of the bonus discs goes through a survey of M4
variations and accessories, with advice from the hosts.
Overall, this is another great addition to any shooter’s
video library.
