My Judo Disclaimer

I was writing a group of reviews on some Judo-related books, when I realized I was spending an inordinate amount of time explaining the context of my particular opinions. I decided it would be easier to post an online disclaimer and link the relevant reviews to it.

Judo
All of my opinions about Judo instructional material are going to be colored by the fact that I was taught an older, more-traditional form of Judo. That means I have certain dislikes about Judo that has changed with decades of competition-focus and wrestling cross pollination. This form of grappling has some insight to offer, but I don’t prefer it. This form of Judo is the most common type practiced, so almost every single book or video on Judo will detail techniques or technical variations I don’t particularly like.  Instead of focusing on those preferences, I’ll just review the quality of the presentation and make note of any particularly good or bad information presented.

Judo and BJJ
On a similar note, since I’ll be covering some Brazilian Jujitsu material, I want to make certain issues clear. Brazilian Jujitsu is old-style Judo ne waza that was taught to the Gracies. It shocks me that people still argue over such stuff, because the evidence is pretty clear, but I still see arguments about it on web forums. That doesn’t mean there stuff isn’t good, a lot of it is. I give them full marks for preserving that brand of grappling when the competitive Judo world was putting severe limits on ground fighting.

Why is this little section important? If you’re reading through all this you’re probably a martial artist, a student of the game and someone who’s looking to expand their knowledge, expand their game. Well, if that’s your goal, then a fantastic resource is old Kosen Judo material. There’s not a ton of it and it’s all almost completely in Japanese, but the material is great. I’ve found more than one slick trick by watching video of some crafty old Japanese men plying their trade.

Despite what I think are pretty fair opinions on the matter, I'm sure some of you will want to send me hate mail. Please feel free to send to daboss@graplyrz.com
